Red Ripe Strawberries

Oh how I love those red ripe strawberries! Takes me right back to when I was a little girl. I spent a lot of summers picking strawberries at Luttrell's berry farms. We would get up at the crack of dawn and walk down to the little store and get on the berry bus. We worked hard, if we wanted to earn any money, or we played hard or dawdled if we had less motivation. It was pretty hot sometimes, and we got rained on, too. But I could earn $1 per flat and if the berries were good and I picked hard I could sometimes earn $12 or $15 a day. That was pretty good pocket cash for a kid back then. I sure wish we had something like berry picking for the kids to earn money these days. Sometimes I think the child labor laws are ruining our children. There isn't a decent hard-working job to be found in the area for kids who are motivated to work and earn their own money.

We planted these berry plants last spring (2010) and got some berries. This year has been a disappointment so far because it has been so rainy and cold that I don't think the berries had a chance. But this morning...Wow! My bowl was overflowing. They aren't very sweet, wondering if that has something to do with the lack of sun as well. But they are good.

Cheerio!
